So what's all the hype about resistant starches? Here's the quick and dirty and how to get more in your life:
Resistant Starches:
- Assist with weight loss by increasing satiety
- Feeds the healthy bacteria in the gut, thereby increasing the type of bacteria you want and the number of them.
- Then, that good bacteria makes short chain fatty acids with the resistant starch which provides the cells of the colon its preferred fuel, butyrate, in turn reducing pH and inflammation!
- Improves metabolic health by increasing insulin sensitivity. In fact, the study below found the acute provision of natural banana starch improved acute postprandial glucose and insulin responses in obese and lean individuals while it also improved insulin and glucose levels over the whole 48-hour period assessed during the study.
Time for increasing the resistant starches in your diet!
Tips....don't exceed 50-60g. And if you are just starting, increase your intake slowly (start at less than 30g) or you're going to feel poopy - literally.
How to Add Resistant Starches
You can easily get resistant starch from real foods like:
- unripe bananas
- plantains
- potatoes roasted with a fat and cooled 12 hours before eaten
- white rice, cooked with a fat, cooled 12 hours before eaten
- white yam
- cassava
l- esser yam
Or you can use Bobs Red Mill Raw Potato Starch (4 Tablespoons has about 32 grams of resistant starch in it and almost no usable carbohydrate). You can sprinkle it on food, use it in smoothies, be clever!
